Back Issue Review: Robin #34

"Situations and Comedies" is a look into a night in the life of Tim Drake, aka Robin, as he is out with a group of his friends watching a park performance of "Macbeth at the Beach". Tim leaves his friends for a little while when his friends get into an argument over the validity of updating or adapting classic works of theatre. While Tim agrees, he still gets frustrated with the argument and steps away for some peace and quiet when he stumbles upon a young thug who is picking a fight with another young man who he claims, "looked at his girl". As any good hero would, Tim breaks up the scuffle when he is spotted by Helena Bertinelli aka The Huntress while she is at the play with a group of her students, and she threatens to report Tim to his principal if he keeps up his fighting ways.

After the encounter with Ms. Bertinelli, Tim spots a car of hoodlums that are preparing to rob the concession stand at the outdoor theatre. Tim eventually suits up and saves the day with a little help from an non-costumed Huntress who takes down the last foe.

If I could sum this issue up with one word, that word would be "fun"

Dixon does a fine job with this issue by integrating the massively hilarious "Macbeth at the Beach" play, which is simply a bunch of surfers performing Macbeth in a beach setting, with some great action and heroics at the hands of Robin and Huntress. The art is in a very "cartoony" style, not gritty like most of Gotham City, but it holds true to the fun nature of this issue. Dixon obviously has a grasp on the nature of Tim Drake in these years, as Tim was one of the more fun-loving Robins that was still a true blue hero, and I really enjoyed the interaction with Tim and his friends. The situation to be in was a bit on the ridiculous side, but it was still an entertaining issue that provided some great action and humor while not seeming unrealistic. It's not a life changing comic, but it's definitely a good, solid read.

This issue is a one and done issue that doesn't rely on any deep knowledge of the Bat Universe and doesn't tie in to anything, so it is a very quick read and you can pick it up at your leisure. A very good read, and I'd recommend any fans of a solid comic for a fun read.

DARK KNIGHT: BOY WONDER Wait, what?

News from Wondercon!

You may have already heard about this, I'm sure you did, but we tell you anyway, All Star Batman & Robin is DEAD! I know that might please and/or distress some of you out there, but wait! There's more! The creative team from All Star Batman and Robin (Frank Miller, Jim Lee) recently announced that they will be working on another project entitled Dark Knight: Boy Wonder.

This story is set to take place in the same universe as many of the other Miller Bat-Books such as Year One, Dark Knight Returns, and The Dark Knight Strikes Again (DKR2). This universe is both loved and hated equally, and All Star Batman & Robin is heavily criticized as an atrocity to the Gotham universe, but personally, as a fan of the Year One/DKR Universe, I am hopeful, if not optimistic about this comic.

Overall, Frank Miller hasn't been able to write to the same caliber recently as he has in his past days, and with projects such as The Spirit motion picture, I think it would be best to go in to this comic skeptical, but on the other hand, THE JIM LEE ART IS FANTASTIC!

Be on the look out for this book to appear in February in 2011, or don't. We won't be mad, we'll still cover it!

Greg Rucka Leaves DC Comics

Well guys, I don't know how to approach this, really, so I'll just say it. Greg Rucka is no longer writing for DC Comics to further his own creator owned projects.

I would like to say, first, that I am extremely happy for him because I know like many others that doing what you love and being creative in your own right gives you complete freedom, and that is the key to happiness, so we here at the Gotham Central Podcast would like to wish Mr. Rucka the best with all of his future endeavors.

But can I be selfish for a minute? Greg Rucka was responsible for some of the best stuff that has come out of Gotham City for quite a while. He was the writer on No Man's Land, a fantastic run on Detective with Batman, the re-imagining of Batwoman in 52 and Detective Comics, he was a writer on Gotham Central and also wrote one of the stories on the Batman: Gotham Knight animated feature. We are losing a HUGE asset to both DC and Gotham City and his presence will be severely missed. I know Justin and I, as well as the extended Gotham Podcast family truly loved his work and we are desperately sad to see him go. Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III won a GLAAD award for their outstanding portrayal of Kate Kane in Detective Comics, and I seriously doubt that we will see anything like that for a long time.

So, Greg, if you see this, we will desperately miss you and your love for Gotham City, but we want to wish you the best and we look forward to more Queen & Country, Stumptown, and other projects.

Thank you so much for everything you have given us.

Neal Adams On Batman: Odyssey

DC’s Source Blog is reporting today that legendary comic book creator Neal Adams will be returning to Batman in 2010.

BATMAN: ODYSSEY will be a 12-part mini-series coming in July. This series marks a return to the character that Adams helped redefine. When I normally think of classic Batman art, Adams’ name is the first that comes to mind.

Synopsis of Odyssey courtesy of DC’s Source Blog:

ODYSSEY finds Batman facing a series of seemingly unrelated challenges, villains and allies, old and new, that push him to his limits as never before. The battles get more intense and, in turn, more deadly, The Dark Knight Detective discovers that there might be an over-arching force behind his troubles. And if this is so, if there is a dark and mysterious matrix being super-imposed over Batman’s life… what sort of life-changing voyage must he go on to free himself from this powerful and insidious direction?

Adams will be heaivly involved with the series, writing and penciling the entire series, while also inking the first two issues.
